The SEP instead advocates that workers form rank-and-file committees, and that seems like just as viable a way of advancing workers' interests. It just seems odd to me that this subreddit would ban a major Trotskyist organisation; or rather, that the viability of unions would be something that's not up for debate- especially nowadays, given the corruption scandals that have mired the UAW union, among others. I don't think that this question was a central component of Trotsky's theories, so I don't see why it is so important here. If unions are progressive organizations that fight for workers' interests, can you please give me some examples of industries in the US, whose workers are better off now than they were 10 years ago, as a result of progressive actions their unions have taken? “Bolshevization”: A Moscow import to the American CP This flexibility is fundamentally different from what became the organizational model of the American communist movement. By extension, the Trotskyist movement inherited these principles, starting with the American Socialist Workers Party (SWP-US). American Trotskyism can trace its roots to 1928, when James P. Cannon, Max Shachtman, and others broke from the American Communist Party upon reading and sharing Trotsky’s writings on the Russian Revolution’s degeneration. Many Trotskyists have rightly celebrated our principled stand against Stalinist distortions. But this stand was four or five years after the world communist movement’s degeneration had already begun — under Grigory Zinoviev. Before this, American communism’s factional atmosphere had trained the future leaders of the Trotskyist movement, just as much as the Stalinists, in bureaucratic practices for securing leadership. Cannon noted later that “allegiance to communism and to the party gave way, gradually and imperceptibly, to allegiance to the faction-gang.”14 The fights between William Z. Foster, Jay Lovestone, John Pepper, Cannon and others sharpened the skills Trotskyists would later use in their own factional battles. These examples challenge the perceived organizational principle of a monolithic, militaristic party. The question shifts from “is breaking discipline permissible?” to “under what context is breaking discipline permissible?” What were the roots of this factionalism? It came from lessons taught in the Socialist Party of America (SP), where many future Communist leaders had first been SP left-wingers. Like the Socialist Labor Party (described in Part One of this series), the SP’s lack of collective leadership, the mass membership’s low political level, and the entrenched divide between reformists, centrists and revolutionaries bred conflict and personalism. The control of the apparatus came to be seen as key for the political direction of the party — and key for fighting factional opponents. The “big tent” led to the same bureaucratic methods many now reject. Stories abound. In 1908, the right-wing-controlled National Executive Committee rejected the application of Alfred Wagenknecht, a West Coast Left-SP party organizer, for national organizer on openly ideological grounds.15 Charles Ruthenburg, later a leader of his own faction in the CP, tried to introduce an amendment in the 1912 Socialist Party convention only to have the convention chairman, a member of the SP’s right wing, deny its introduction.16 As Ira Kipnis describes: “The Socialist civil war quickly developed a pattern of expulsions, campaigns for control of key committees, formation of dual state and local organizations, and intervention by the Right-wing national office. In some of the local organizations the controversies were so prolonged, involved, and bitter that it is almost impossible to distinguish between various factions.”17 By the time these SP left-wingers became newly-minted communists, they had developed a taste and skill for factional warfare. First, a political struggle took place between those seeking to organize a public-facing party against those who believed organizing underground and in secret was a point of principle. But in a few short years, as James P. Cannon writes, “the new factional alignments began to take shape, and the struggle for ‘control of the party,’ which was to last for six years… was under way.”18 In 1923, Pepper “ran the party with an iron hand… he ‘politicalized’ the party to beat hell, and influenced his opponents almost as much as his supporters.”19 A sympathizer and friend of Trotsky in New York, Ludwig Lore, came under fire as the leader of a “non-Communist tendency” in the new party.20 In 1925, Ruthenburg and Jay Lovestone charged new leaders Foster and Cannon as carrying on a “relentless policy of suspensions, disciplinary [actions] and expulsion of the opposition,” while Foster and Cannon alleged that the “Minority is encouraging gross violations of discipline and in propagating the idea of a split in the Party.”21 Foster declared that in the faction fight with Ruthenburg’s group his character had “been assassinated in every conceivable form, even to that of my being called a thief.”22 Meanwhile, then-Foster loyalists Shachtman and William F. Dunne had “barricaded themselves in the Daily Worker editorial offices, refusing entry to Ruthenburg supporters, including… the paper’s co-editor.” Such was the schooling our ancestors received — lessons they would carry with them through future struggles. Factionalism had taught these leaders how to attack opponents and jockey for power. Zinoviev’s “Bolshevization” campaign put forward the monolithic party (run by a single set of unified leaders) as the supposed alternative. Next, the factional atmosphere in the CPUSA created fertile ground for party despotism to take seed as an apparent (but false) solution starting in 1924. Masked as “Bolshevism,” this degenerative bureaucratism consolidated the “monolithic party” idea — banning factions and preventing any dissent (especially public dissent). As part of Russia’s creep towards Stalinism over the 1920s, the international organization of Communist Parties (Comintern, based in Russia) turned advisement into unquestioning acceptance of its Russian leaders’ lines. This, in turn, clamped down on the space to question national leaderships too. At the Fifth Comintern Congress and under pressure from Zinoviev’s leadership, one Communist party after another, from the United States to Japan, testified they “really weren’t Communist” but tainted with social-democratic politics and organizational methods.23 The resulting campaign to “Bolshevize” turned these parties into pliant agents of Stalinist foreign policy, thoroughly hostile to democratic control from below. Factionalism had taught these leaders how to attack opponents and jockey for power. Zinoviev’s “Bolshevization” campaign put forward the monolithic party (run by a single set of unified leaders) as the supposed alternative. Though the Trotskyist movement did more to move beyond Stalinism’s simple catechisms and hosannas, the imprint of Zinoviev’s “Bolshevization” campaign remained. These assumptions were largely imported into the American Trotskyist movement by its main founder, Cannon, and others like Shachtman who served as lieutenants in his faction in the American Communist Party. After all, Cannon was known in the CP of the 1920s as the “Captain of Bolshevization.” In his view in 1924, a Bolshevik party: “Must be a centralized party prohibiting factions, tendencies, and groups. It must be a monolithic party… Our party [CPUSA] has been plagued with factions, tendencies and groups. At least one-half of the energy of the party has been expended in factional struggles, one after another. We have grown into the habit of accepting this state of affairs as a normal condition.”24 Twenty years later, the campaign to “Bolshevize” the American CP still served as a reference point. In Cannon’s assessments, absence reveals more than what he mentions explicitly. In his First Ten Years of American Communism, he says: “In spite of all, Zinoviev deserves restoration as one of the great hero-martyrs of the revolution… The lasting personal memory I have of him is of his patient and friendly efforts in 1925 to convince both factions [of the CPUSA] of the necessity of party peace and cooperation, summed up in his words to [William Z.] Foster which I have mentioned before: ‘Frieden ist besser’ (‘Peace is better’).”25 Only once did he make a critical appraisal of Zinovievism. As he said in a letter in the mid-1960s: “Probably the hardest lesson I had to learn from Trotsky, after ten years of bad schooling through the Communist Party, was to let organizational questions wait until the political questions at issue were fully clarified, not only in the National Committee but also in the ranks of the party.”26 Until then, he believed the Stalinized Comintern merely “fed the flames of factionalism in order to fish in the troubled waters to create its own Stalinist faction.” By the time of his reevaluation, how much Zinovievism had he unconsciously imparted? When did the germs slip in, indeed?

Whatever the origin of the word, we need to look at what it has come to mean today. As other empires of the last two centuries have fallen or become reorganized, America is due for a reinvention. The word “America” is a reminder of the time when condescending European conquerors felt the world at large was a place populated by primitives, and it was the duty of an enlightened European to colonize it at often barbaric costs. The country of the United States of America has in its DNA a collective forgetting of what it has done to its Native American population, the ongoing pain of its history of slavery, the hard and often dark choices it has had to make to fight the Cold War and emerge as the world’s preeminent (and often disliked) superpower. It is time to reclaim and rebrand this land by giving it a new name. What kind of name could it be? One approach would be to take its name from the people who have inhabited it before the European colonization. As the recent renaming of Mt. McKinley to its original Koyukon name Denali has shown, such an approach can get traction. However, as there have been countless indigenous people with different languages living on this land, it could be hard to choose which native word to use. I am partial to “Turtle Island”, a very friendly kind of name. Who would want to attack Turtle Island? It sounds like a very friendly place. I'm hearing a lot about it in tech and engineering where Canadian new grads are left unemployed but those on work permits find jobs without any particularly unique skillset. Up till 2022 the majority of the fast food industry was staffed by teens, seniors and the occasional middle aged adults and it worked fine. It just required the management and ownership having to put effort into laying out a a staffing schedule. Now we have some fast food joints selling LMIA's and requiring the TFW's to rent housing from the fast food owner (slum lord), along with requiring unpaid work. Modern day slavery is what it is. The entire fast food industry needs to be told any TFW now currently will expire at the end of the term and there will be zero new TFW's granted. Just make it so every worker hired is paid 200% of the median wage for that field, 150% to the worker, 50% to a training fund to help fix skill shortages. No one is saying “we’re inches away from a revolution so democratic socialists are the enemy”. Debate is the cornerstone of learning and i think the lack of “action” around left wing politics feeds these debates more and more. I also think it fundamentally impacts how people view the emancipation of the working class which is disingenuous to suggest is not important. e.g. a Maoist is much more likely to study the contradictions facing the working class in their area etc etc. Apologies for the ramble but I don’t really think debate holds us back, not engaging with the working class and there needs and focusing on abstract discussion sure but I’m not sure that stems from ideological difference so much as it does just a general sense of hopelessness amongst the left. Additionally, there's a livestream of people entering the concert area and many people have Nazi symbols on their shirts and are doing the "Roman salute". So why is literally no one talking about this? I know it seems like regional news but this is the largest concert this region has seen in many years and it's extremely politically charged. Not even in socialist circles outside of Croatia have I seen any talk about it, while Budapest pride made international news (not that I'm against it of course). [Content warning: article and embedded videos include strong descriptions of violence, sexual assault, self-injury] Thoroughly researched and disturbing, this Wired article reviews hundreds of 911 calls placed from immigration detention centers run by GEO Group and CoreCivic, our nation’s two largest private prison companies and providers of immigration detention. As the article makes clear, “immigration detention” is just prison by another name, but for people whose only “crime” was coming to the U.S. in search of stability and safety. The two private prison companies talk a good game about fulfilling their legal obligations to provide adequate shelter and medical care, but the 911 calls reviewed by Wired tell a different story. Medical emergencies of various kinds, some allegedly caused by facility staff, are either actively downplayed or even dismissed, in some cases while the emergency is heard to play out in the background. Perhaps most disturbing is the high likelihood that 911 calls represent a small percentage of the actual emergencies and abuse that happen at these facilities. These disturbing phone calls are supplemented by multiply-corroborated reports from detainees, their families, their legal representatives, and advocates who describe overcrowded facilities, lack of basic medical care, terrible (sometimes inedible) food, and more. Most of these reports come from several months ago, before the latest round of pressure from the DHS to push the number of detainees even higher. Remember: the cruelty is the point. Although the prison system in the US is arguably a gruesome torture industry, this has much more similarities with the german concentration camps. The chaotic, inhumane housing of masses of people in the worst of conditions with no regard to human rights and sometimes even active participation in torture and murder. Btw concentration camps were (in the beginning) not where they primarily killed people. They detained them under very similar conditions and a lot of them died there a most gruesome death but they had “Vernichtungslager” as well which had the primary use of industrially killing men, women and children, burning them and or burying them (sometimes alive). This is fascism. There are no two ways about it. We are watching the beginning of another reich. Capitalism is pulling out the knives.

Number one is general passive support for my beliefs, “yeah it’s terrible what’s happening” kinda stuff. People will usually seem slightly uncomfortable but supportive when I talk about Palestine, but those who disagree are few and much louder and more emotional than those who support Palestine. Now while most people in my experience won’t argue with you, it’s not like they’ll actually do much to stop the genocide, part of that is my fault for not advocating enough for others to boycott. Number two, Americans do not, in my experience distinguish between Jew and Zionist, in an argument once I saw a women just look down and shake her head and said she supports the Jews, it dude matter that I said most Jews don’t live in Israel and that I’m an antizionist jew. You don’t really hear Israel, just Jews. I once saw a women at a grocery store whining that we’re out of frozen potato soup cause “the Jews and Arabs are fighting”. The next point, Americans love their comforts, I was once at a party having a conversation with like three other people about how the houthis are justified to end genocide and everyone stopped talking cause my mom’s fascist friend showed up and we didn’t want to make it awkward. The next minor point is religiousity, I saw a woman in one breath say the genocide was terrible and then sigh and say it’s god’s plan. The next point is that sometimes you have to ideologies can get complicated, I was once in an argument with three other people, two who seemed to not like the Palestinians but didn’t really care all that much, and one who absolutely hated them. Now the two did seem rather easily swayed somewhat by things I said, but then it got complicated cause one of the two was super anti immigrant and pro alligator Alcatraz and the Zionist was also pro immigrant so I had to switch from arguing on her side to not back and fourth. The people I know to argue with me are usually older and Republican, in one case a vet and the other a Zionist Jew, so you kinda expect the demographics with who agrees and not. Sitting down with them and saying, "Well... The Houthis are a group of Shia Muslims, who believe that their Prophet actually named his cousin as the leader of the faith before his death in 650 AD. They are in armed and political conflict with the Salafists, an orthodox group of Sunni Muslims who believe that the Prophet didn't' actually designate a successor. The Houthis were started in 30 years ago to represent the Shia minority in Yemen in response to a the rise of a strongly Sunni national leader who threatened the local sovereignty of their minority group. Over time, they've grown in local political and military influence with the financial backing of other Shia forces in the region and expanded their scope to include resistance against foreign influence on the region, meaning that from Israel and United States among others.
